Bizarre Cleaning Tip

By Beth Black This has to be the most bizarre cleaning tip I have found recently. I heard it on local radio by an expert in alternative cleaning solutions and household tips. This tip was accompanied by much joshing and giggles from the presenters of the program but at the end the logic behind the tip became evident. How to clean Mould and Grime from an Oil Painting. Have fun trying to convince your wife of this tip. 1. Require 1 litre of female urine. ( Must be female) Leave for several days uncovered in a glass container until the liquid has reduced by half. Leave uncovered so it will evaporate. Of course the time required for this tip will depend on the temperature so it is best to try it in the summer months as you dont want to have a container of urine lying around for weeks. By the way urine looses its smell very quickly. It changes to an ammonia smell very quickly. Suggest you use a netting type cover to keep insects etc out but will still allow evaporation to take place. 2. Then add 2 tablespoons of grated raw potato and 2 tablespoons of sugar. 3. Leave for 30 minutes. Strain into a clean glass jar. Seal and it will keep for months. Rub on gently and it will clean mould and grime from an oil painting. NB This is not to be used on water colours or other water based painting mediums. This might be worth a try if you have a valuable oil painting and you dont want to have it professionally cleaned. It was hinted that this procedure is used by the experts but I am not sure on this. If this is in fact used by the experts it may account for the cost of professional cleaning if not in the materials required but in the time required to produce the cleaner. In effect you are creating an all organic natural bleach without harsh chemicals. This is definitely one for the environmentalists and greenies amongst us. Strange but true. I am in favour of any easy and cheap alternative cleaning products and tips that do not use harsh chemicals. Too many of our current day cleaning chemicals are destroying the natural enzymes that help us to keep a balance in nature. I live in a country area of Australia and naturally I am not connected to a town sewerage system. By law I have an enclosed recycling system for all household waste that is treated and then the water can be used for watering the garden or any vegetation that is not used for human consumption. One chemical that destroys the enzymes that help this system to function is bleach. On occasions it is necessary to use bleach and the quickest and easiest way to restore the natural enzymes is to flush a small tub of plain yoghurt containing acidophilus down the loo. Even if you are connected to a town sewerage system we should all be aware of the affect of chemicals on our environment. Read the labels on some of those chemicals you use. If they include bleach try using baking soda and moisten it with a little vinegar - this both cleans and disinfects. Beth Black is the webmaster for Keyword Articles.
