Resisting Temptation - The JESUS Way

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Erik Carter One thing that Jesus was NOT - was flashy. When He cured someone, it was with a touch. When He spoke, the crowds came to Him. And when He resisted the Devil - it was through the simple mechanisms of fasting, prayer, and Scripture. These are things each of us can do daily or weekly, which fits completely with Jesus’s advice to not put on a public display. Your life - your resistance to temptation - will be all the display you need. In the Gospels, the best known examples of Jesus facing and resisting temptation are the 3 tests in the desert at the very beginning of His ministry. Just after His baptism by John, Jesus was led into the desert by the Holy Spirit, where He fasted for 40 days. At the end of that time, the Devil came and tempted Him 3 times. The first was the request to turn stones into bread. For the second test, the Devil took Jesus to the top of the Temple and bade Him leap off, and be protected by the angels. The third test was the presentation to Jesus of all the world’s empires, in exchange for Jesus worshipping the Devil. What is notable about all three examples - and the most applicable to your life - is that Jesus had the strength to resist these powerful and almost overwhelming temptations by His fasting and praying for 40 days, and by quoting Scripture. Another example is Jesus’s prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus never asked to be let out of His mission. He simply asked if there were an alternative. Jesus always recognized that God’s will must be done. Jesus berated the apostles who accompanied Him for falling asleep, explaining that the time could be better spent in prayer, the better to strengthen themselves against temptation. Jesus faced several temptations during His trial before Pilate and Herod, including the mocking by the soldiers and the physical and emotional torture He faced by the whipping, crowning with thorns, and humiliating slaps from the guards. Jesus resisted the temptation to either quit His ministry or retaliate (remember, He had told Peter in the Garden at his arrest that He could summon legions of angels to His side). Jesus resisted the temptation by remaining true to His mission. The final temptation of Jesus was when He was hanging on the cross, dying from blood loss and suffocation. The crowd and the thief to his side mocked Him, calling for Him to come down from the cross. Again, Jesus resisted the temptation by focusing on His mission, even granting eternal life to the thief who praised Him. Jesus throughout the Gospels emphasized connecting with God, but nowhere was that more obvious than these incidents where He was tempted. He repeatedly explained that prayer and fasting were paramount in strengthening yourself to resist temptation, and quoted Scripture to answer the Devil. Timeless Dating Tips That Works: How To Impress A Girl No Matter Who You Are

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Chun Hung Leng There are many articles available on how to impress a girl, and many books as well. But how, really, do you get and keep her attention, and keep her coming back to wonderful you? Do you follow the men’s versions of The Rules, that say you wait x number of times, you avoid a, b, c, and you be sure to always do d, e, and f? Do you follow the special advice on how to impress a girl you are attracted to or who is wealthy? Do you go with the psychology of genders, and follow the generalizations that all girls want Brad Pitt, are on diets, and love to shop? If you do try to abide by any of the above “rules,” are you not eliminating a number of options to meet and maybe get involved with a girl who loves cars and can drop an engine, rebuild it, and replace it in three weeks? Won’t you be leaving out the girls who have no money but are potential moneymakers, as they are working two jobs and taking classes at night to become a veterinarian or a geologist? You get the idea. Following some common advice on how to impress a girl might in fact have the opposite effect: you may offend her when you were trying to intrigue her, make her laugh when you intended to make her swoon, or you may make her scream when you meant to make her giggle or laugh. So how about this? Try following a few righteous and fair methods that work almost every time. Be real, and be realistic. If you deliberately lie once, you have just changed everything. You now have to keep track of the lie, never forget it, and know that that lie is what part of your potential relationship is now based on,, if she believes you. One day, if you start dating, she will find out and dump you, or at least be very hurt and have a reason to mistrust you. If you will be yourself, meaning that it’s okay to be nervous if you are nervous (some girls find that adorable), and clumsy if you are clumsy (some girls find this endearing). Remember that the girl you seek to impress might not be the one for you,…no matter how close a next-door neighbor she is or how many years you all went to the same football games and movies. Look for someone else if you are just not each other’s type. Be confident and self-reliant. Do not think yourself unworthy of every woman who walks into study hall, either. Try to strike a healthy balance between “morose doom” and “nauseating cockiness.” We do not know how to handle either of you, other than to giggle nervously and then run in the other direction as fast as we can. Be interesting and interested. Cultivate an interest in her hobbies as much as you expect her to develop an interest in yours. Be as healthy as you can be. Studies show that we are attracted to bodies and faces that represent optimum reproductive abilities and features. Doing whatever you can to achieve this will be very helpful, so take care of yourself. Not everyone can look like Brad Pitt, but you can keep yourself properly groomed, eat a healthy diet, and get in better shape if you have been a couch potato. Be fair. Do not put the girl you are attracted to on a pedestal or cut her down unfairly. She won’t make love to you constantly. She is also not your mother, so do not expect her to clean up after you or cook for you whenever you demand it. If you are just meeting her, do not tell her how much you adore your mother. Finally, have a positive attitude. You do not have to fake joy and happiness if your favorite pet just died, but try to see something good in every person you meet. And try to see some good in yourself. Offering a smile and a joke if appropriate can help you bond with her. So can simply saying, “Hello.” Leng Chun Hung writes essential and practical tips for people struggling to find partners. Marketing Ideas For Small Businesses

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

By Max Bellamy The resources of any given firm are usually limited. As such, no firm can normally afford to attack the entire market without any delimitation whatsoever. It would be better if the efforts are concentrated on the most productive and profitable segments of the market. By focusing sharply on each of the different customer groups within a market, market segmentation would make the marketing effort more efficient and economical. It will ensure that the marketing effort is concentrated on well defined and carefully chosen market segments, instead of being frittered away over irrelevant segments or unproductive and unprofitable territories and markets. As a matter of fact, some marketing experts have described market segmentation as the strategy of dividing the markets in order to conquer them. Through segmentation the marketing man can continuously look for the differences among the customer groups and decide on appropriate strategies. Segmentation help assess how far the existing offers in the market from competitors match the needs of the customer segments. Thereby segmentation also helps the marketing man spot the relatively less satisfied segments and make a business success by satisfying such segments. Segmentation brings benefits not only to the firm but also to customers. When market segmentation reaches higher levels of sophistication and perfection, customers and companies can choose each other for mutual benefit and satisfaction. They can rely on each others discrimination. The firm can anticipate the future wants of customers and the customers can anticipate the future capabilities of the firm. Market targeting is the process of fixing ones target market. It should not be considered synonymous with market segmentation. The two concepts are significantly different from each other. Market segmentation is actually the prelude to target market selection. The marketing man normally carries out several tasks in addition to segmentation before selecting the target market. De-Bunking The “Follow Your Bliss” Myth

Monday, February 11th, 2008

By Patricia Soldati Hello Fellow Seekers! I dont know about you but Im pretty tired of hearing about how you can follow your dream in three or four easy steps. Ive seen plenty of people leap before they sufficiently looked –and end up dissatisfied or broke, or both. Ive also had clients come to me after reading a hot, new book or attending a workshop. And they still cant figure out what it is they want to do for a living. Of course not! You cant think your way to a new career or, at least you cant 99% of the time. The truth is that career change is no walk in the park. It takes focus, a smart strategy and guts. Focus: Anyone can start their career change effort with vigor. But keeping your fires burning for the duration of your journey is another story. Given the roadblocks and the absence of any hard deadlines, its just the kind of priority that can fall through the cracks of your busy life. The key is to create an environment of accountability. Here are four ways to do this: 1. Schedule your career change activities into your weekly calendar. As Steven Covey would say, make it a big rock priority. 2. Register for a class or workshop that keeps you engaged and focused for an extended period of time. 3. Career change cant be done in a vacuum. Work with a mentor or coach who has a good business head and market perspective. 4. Know exactly what you hope to gain from your career change. A clear and compelling personal benefit is your secret weapon to hanging in there for the duration of your journey. A Smart Strategy: The old adage look before you leap is perfect advice for prospective career-changers. Keep your day job and let your paycheck enable you to take all the time you need to discover new work options and test them out. Successful career changers know that this is the essence of the process — and it usually doesn’t happen overnight. Once you are clear that a particular path is right for you craft a good plan to get there. At a minimum, your plan will include new training requirements and timing, building a new network, and a communications strategy for leaving your current employer. Guts: Successful career-changers know two things: First, how critical the courage factor is to their ultimate success; and, second, that its not possible to feel courageous 100% of the time. By its very nature, the career-change journey is a wiggly road. When your courage is on the wane, try these approaches: 1. Dont confuse uncertainty with disaster. Avoid the mental drama that takes you to the worst possible outcome. These projections are not your present reality. 2. Focus on your gifts and talents. Acknowledge yourself deeply, and at the feeling level — for the experience and skills you have gained. Write them down as a reminder of your abundance. 3. Trust in Divine Presence. As long as you continue to pursue your career change smartly, and take solid, active steps (i.e., do your part!), providence will support you as well. Finally, remember that we are indeed, a free agent nation. Safe, smart career change is possible and thousands of people just like you have successfully re-invented their working lives. Without question, you can, too. May you thrive in work — and life! Oldest Bible To Online Bible

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

By William Teleo Last year, press releases from the religious and scholastic communities had been ripe with news of digitizing and making Codex Sinaiticus an online bible. To the uninitiated, this is considered the oldest known Bible, dating back 17 centuries ago. Published during the rift between the East and West Roman Empire, the Bible was said to have been commissioned by Emperor Constantine when he adopted Christianity. It also included the oldest version of the New Testament. The year 2005 had been the start of an ambitious project, but no new publicity had been announced regarding the manuscript’s online bible version. The online bible version was conceptualized with four phases: conservation, digitization, transcription, and academic commentary. The online Codex project aimed to reach a wider, and even worldwide audience through the internet. Tools developed for the manuscript’s internet launch include a CD Rom, free website, and digital facsimile. The project is intended to be the standard of collaborative manuscript projects. However, the team behind the Codex project was reportedly having troubles with the first phase of the project and is not quite done yet. Conservation is essential to protect the Codex from damage during the project. Since the manuscript is old and very fragile, the conservation team faced the difficulty of restoring the manuscript to readable and presentable texts. Scot McKendrick, British Library’s Medieval and Earlier Manuscripts Department chair, commented that the manuscript is very distinct from other old manuscripts. Given the size of each parchment (37 cm) and the text layering (four columns of Greek texts), it is a considerable feat to finish the conservation of all 400 pages in a short time. Probably eyeing a 2010 or 2011 launch date, the Codex still have to undergo a digitization process. This involves taking digital images of the texts and the whole manuscript. Transcription is an essential part of the process since not everyone can understand Greek symbols. Scholars contribute commentaries and discussion as an added feature of the online bible. The process necessitates long hours of study from language and the principles from the Codex, to its similarities and differences from the present Bible. The religious and academic block had expressed their interest and excitement about the manuscript’s online release. Due to its sensitive nature, only four scholars — apart from those involve in the online bible project — have seen the document up close. McKendrick estimated the whole Codex project to be over in about four years. Incidentally named after Mt. Sinai where Moses received the Ten Commandments, Codex Sinaiticus studies are now considered as the peak of religious learning. The Woman’s Guide to Younger Men

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Chris Olander I often awake to find Beverly, my older wife, wrapped around me like a Virginia creeper. In the nineteen years since we met, she has shown me what true love is, and I couldn’t live without it. For the first time, I have someone who wants me as much as I want her. Falling in love with an older woman is the best thing I ever did, and I’m not alone. The percentage of women marrying younger men doubled over the past two decades, and women marrying for the second time are seven times more likely to marry a younger man. Listen to women with younger husbands or lovers and you’ll hear: “We’re a perfect fit,” “He accepts me as I am,” “He keeps me young,” “I liked it on top.” If you haven’t discovered the joys of a younger man, it’s probably cultural. Close your eyes and imagine a romantic couple snuggling together. One person is older and distinguished; the other is young and sexy. What do you see in your mind’s eye? If it’s an older man with his second (or third) wife, you’re not alone. Hollywood is run by men, so it’s hard to escape their fantasies. Perhaps it’s time to rewrite the script. Women who consider younger partners triple their chances of finding the love they deserve. More importantly, older women and younger men enjoy equal, open, and exciting relationships. As one forty-seven year old divorcee with a twenty-eight year old lover says, “Younger men are just more fun.” The first step in finding the right partner is to know more about yourself. What are you passionate about? Think about people, places, objects, issues, careers, organizations, and hobbies. Write down several, starting with the most important. Close your eyes and imagine your ideal soulmate. What things must you share? What’s “negotiable?” (Careful, this doesn’t mean ignoring your feelings, denying deeply held beliefs, or trying to change someone else). What’s “non-negotiable?” Imagine yourself on your deathbed. What are three things you wish you had done? This may seem like a curious way to find a mate, but sometimes we’re too busy living our lives to question whether it’s the right life. Think about what you really want, not what you think you should want. This might include raising a family, succeeding at your career, building a business, fighting for an issue, or finding a spiritual community. We all have many roles in life, but pick your top three priorities. Now look in the mirror and remember yourself ten years ago. Didn’t you have many of the same hopes and dreams then that you have now? Imagine the ideal partner for your younger self. Before thinking “he’s too young for me,” ask, “too young for what?” It might be time to “think again” about younger men. If you can’t imagine yourself with a younger man, let your interests, aspirations, and values guide you. The best way to find someone worthwhile is to become the person you always wanted to be. By being good to yourself and others, you help people become better and you attract better people. Visualize doing something with your soulmate (no, outside the bedroom). Where are you? Browsing at the local bookstore? Jogging? Building homes for poor families? If you’re looking for the right person, you can meet your ideal partner anytime, anywhere, doing almost anything. The most important thing is to be yourself rather than pretending to be someone you think others will want. Remember the “rules” for women that advised: “Don’t talk to a man first” and “Don’t call him and rarely return his calls”? You can make your own rules by understanding that age is an asset. If you believe in yourself, you’ll look for someone to complement you rather than complete you. Start by being less concerned about whether a man is older, wiser, richer, taller, or all the things you might have wanted when you were sixteen. the most important thing about a man is his character. Younger guys may need guidance, but we all teach others how to treat us, and older women are better teachers. No matter what your age, you don’t need to change the world to find love, sometimes all that has to change is you. If you are open to a different kind of relationship, a younger man will appear in your life. It happens all the time. About The Author Copyright 2004 - Chris K. Hottest New Trends In Wedding Rings

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By L Hayes Like hem lines, wedding rings change with fashion and the seasons in order to offer alternatives to the traditional styles for wedding couples. The bride and groom, however, have minds of their own when it comes to buying engagement and wedding bands. Here are a few of the hottest trends in wedding rings. The most fashionable, hot items are platinum and white-gold wedding rings. For the past few years, white gold and platinum in a channel set or prongs have been very strong. Yellow gold is also very strong and is getting more fashionable. Couples are looking for more contemporary designs using baguettes. It’s a more desirable, more contemporary look. Couples are asking for wedding bands with round diamonds. They are looking for better quality. What was customary is no longer the rule. At one time, eternity bands, a band with diamonds all around the ring, were given as a 10th or 15th wedding anniversary gift. Now, however, people are buying these rings for other occasions and are not bound by protocol. Couples don’t want so much the plain vanilla looking bands that traditionally have been worn by men. Today’s rings offer a stronger look for men, with women preferring a more delicate look. Platinum remains a favorite with wedding couples, but they may gulp at the price. A lot of people are still looking at platinum, but they find it’s expensive. They’re upgrading to 18-carat white gold, and they don’t have to stretch their budget with the platinum. Couples prefer the princess cut to a round one, while demand for pear or heart shaped stones is lower. Diamonds are still used as a center stone, but for side stones, colored gems such as yellow diamonds or blue sapphires are preferred these days. Tanzanite is another colored stone that people are requesting and using as an accent. People are accenting everything with it because of its periwinkle, light-blue appearance. It is very clean looking and it’s especially gorgeous in a white gold. They can use it on a three-stone engagement ring. The ring has a larger center stone with two reasonably sized stones on each side, such as a diamond with two tanzanite stone accents. A variation on the three-stone engagement ring may include similar-sized stones instead of the center one being larger. The stones may be three diamonds or, more often than not, a sapphire or yellow diamond may also be used. Sapphires appear not only in blue but are available in a variety of colors, such as pinks, canary yellow and pale green. The biggest trend is toward a retro, classic look. The most sought-after metal is platinum, which has greater durability and a much whiter color than white gold. A platinum ring can easily last 50 years and there is a lot of engraving on these bands. Even the shapes of stones bring back memories of earlier years. They are somewhat retro. For example, the bullet cut was very popular in the 1920s. It is a variation on a baguette, with five sides, a half-moon with a square or emerald cut. A trillion cut, a triangular shape, may also be used with marquis shapes and with emerald and princess cuts. L Hayes is a wedding professional and owner of Wedding Favors Emporium. Getting the Skinny on Plastic Surgery

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

By Stacy Richford Cosmetic surgery is becoming a normal practice for many people, almost to the point that its like going to the dentist. However this does not mean all is well in this cosmetic candy land. Yes, plastic surgery is very common and you have lots of doctors and surgical choices available to you, but there are other factors one needs to think about before making their way to the doctors office. Along with deciding on the right doctors and particular surgical procedure you want done; it would be wise to contemplate if the risks are worth the potential results. When you are deciding on what doctor will perform your surgery be sure you have reviewed all of his or her credentials. Its also advisable to talk with the doctors past patients and staff. If you have any friends or family that have had cosmetic surgery; talk with them about their doctor and how their procedure went. When deciding on a surgeon it is very important you verify that they are certified and properly accredited. There are many horror stories related to cosmetic surgery based on people not doing their due diligence on this important detail. After choosing your doctor you may want to factor in the distance and travel time from your home to the hospital. This plays an important role after your surgery since you will need to visit with your surgeon for follow up care. Make sure you arrange for a friend or family member to pick you up after your procedure. You will most likely be unable to drive due to medication or other surgery related reasons. However, not all surgeries require you to have another person drive you home, but you probably will not feel like driving after the operation even if you feasibly could. Most procedures are not covered under insurance policies unless your health is adversely affected and can only be corrected through a particular operation. Even then you must get a referral from a specialist who must provide in written detail why its imperative you have the procedure done. It is important to note that insurance companies are getting more lenient with their approvals on certain plastic surgeries; especially if the operation could lower the risk of you needing future medical care in the short and long term. Taking care of yourself post and pre-op will play an important role on how well you heal after your cosmetic surgery. You must keep all bandages on and clean. Avoid over exerting yourself as you will likely be restricted in most normal everyday activities. In many cases swelling will be present and persistent as your body readjusts to its new look and feel. Mentally you may feel fatigued or even disappointed, but these feelings resolve once the bandages have been removed and surgical areas have reduced in swelling. With cosmetic surgery you are changing your physical appearance so it will take getting use too. Some after post-op are still unsatisfied with the results and may need or want further procedures. Cosmetic surgery should be well thought through and you must be mentally ready for any adverse outcome. So take time deciding what will be right for you.
